Renting a car gives you the freedom to make snap decisions: a trip to Jerusalem, or explore Massada, or just wander around Tel Aviv? Wherever you want to travel, a car rental can make your journey more pleasant.
From which company should you rent a car?
We recommend renting a car from Israeli car rental companies which operate multiple branches locally and worldwide, or from international companies that run branches allowing you to rent a car in Israel. Some car rental companies are expansive, some smaller but we recommend conducting price comparisons, checking cheap car rental in Israel period options (car rental for one month, car rental for one day, etc), the types of vehicles you can rent and their prices, and once you’ve got the data together, make an informed choice based on what’s best for you.
Although some countries require an additional fee for bringing the vehicle to the airport terminal, this option certainly makes it easier for you to get from the airport to where you're staying and saves you having to carry luggage on public transport, which can be exhausting if you’ve just come off a long flight or a flight that lands at awkward hours. This is all the truer if you’ve come a s a family, with tired young children in tow.
What documents do you need to present to rent a car?
If you’ve decided to rent a car abroad for a trip, you'll need to have an international credit card with you and present it together with your Israeli driver’s license. You may also be asked to show an international driver’s license, but this depends on each country’s laws, so check that in advance. All documents need to be in the name of the person booking the vehicle. It’s important to note that drivers who have held a license for a year or more are valid, and in some locations, the driver needs to be at least 25 years old and up. Some countries allow drivers of 21 years old and up for an additional fee. No car rental company will allow use of its cars without appropriate basic insurance. Should the driver want to add third party insurance, this will incur an additional fee. Some car rental companies allow you to purchase additional elements such as rescue and towing insurance.
When you receive your rental car, what should you check?
Your rental car should arrive with a full tank of fuel, which is how you return it. If the fuel tank is not full-on returning the vehicle, you'll be charged at a higher price for the refill. Avoid misunderstandings by checking the type of fuel needed.
It’s very important to check what the mileage/kilometer limitation is, and avoid going over that amount, which will cost you extra. Make sure to return the vehicle on time because lateness will be charged as another day’s rental.
